What should you know about Lyme disease testing?
Different tests give different information about the infection. The following questions will help you to find your way around the testing options and understand what methods are available
When should you get tested for Lyme disease?

How reliable are Lyme tests?
The reliability of Lyme tests depends on what they test for.
Many conventional tests measure antibodies produced by the immune system, which:
- may not be detectable in early infection
- may be inaccurate in the case of immune system disorders
- Previous cured may also show signs of infection
The DualDur test directly tests for the presence of Borrelia bacteria and does not rely solely on the immune response. This can help give a more accurate picture of the current state of the infection.
Can Lyme disease be detected with a blood test?
Yes, Lyme disease can usually be tested from a blood sample.
Different blood tests show different information:

Can I test negative even if I am infected?
Yes, it can happen, especially with tests that measure immune response.

„You could say I swooned when I saw a photo of what I had inside me.”
I was born that way, with Lyme, says László P., who has thrown himself into Lyme research in his retirement. He believes that many of his relatives can be, or have been, infected, and today he can tell quite easily whether someone has Lyme or not. During her research, she read that the spirochaete can also enter the placenta if the mother is infected. She was last bitten by a tick in 2014, after which she developed really severe symptoms. She wanted to get better, so she started researching the infection and spent 8-10 hours a day doing so.
Why did you think it was important to have a Lyme borreliosis test?
As I had a number of unexplained symptoms, ranging from sensitivity to light and sound, to undue fatigue and stomach upsets that I never managed to cure permanently, I tried to find out more. I heard and read about the infection in books by Ágnes Makara and Sarolta Monspart, and later researched on the internet, read English literature and was almost certain that I had Lyme disease.
How did you find out about the DualDur test?
I found the Istenhegyi clinic through my online searches and met Dr. Bózsik, whose work made me decide to have the DualDur test done. This is finally the most logical test, as it detects not the antibody but the pathogen itself. I had great confidence in it, and I was further strengthened by the fact that the European Union supported the project.
How did you receive the result?
Sadly, because it showed me the truth, that I have co-infections, Bartonella and Babesia. You could say I fainted when I saw a photo of what I had. Previously, in the early 2000s, I had an antibody test at the Laszlo Hospital, but it did not show Lyme, so I was not given therapy.
How will your therapy evolve in the light of the results?
As I am older, a strong, long-lasting course of antibiotics would not be good. I know alternative solutions that allow me to reach a level I can live with, to be as active as I want to be. I don't want to name this alternative because of professional controversy, but the fact is: it helps. I have been using it since last September, when I got the result. If I didn't, I wouldn't be able to talk like this, I would get brain fog and other symptoms like I did then. I plan to come in for a re-test in the future to check if I am really on the right track.
DualDur is also very good because it can photograph bacteria, and even so-called immune complexes.

Why did you think it was important to have a Lyme borreliosis test?
In the spring, I had a spot, and a dermatologist told me it was Lyme disease. I thought that my child might also be infected with borrelia, which could have been brought on by the flu, as we both had the flu in February. I also had joint problems, which were then treated. Anyway, I began to suspect that he was infected, even though he had no skin symptoms. I thought it was important that she had a diagnosis and I thought she might have „inherited” it from me, as I had joint and other problems before she was born, but I didn't know I was infected.
How did you find out about the DualDur test?
I took my little girl from one place to another until I finally managed to get a serological test. This showed that she was infected, and she was given antibiotics, but not targeted enough, not effective enough, so there was only a temporary improvement. I searched the internet, looked on official research sites and found a Lyme Facebook group. That's where I first read about DualDur. We had the test at the end of July: I was waiting for confirmation that my child was not false positive, as I had been told.
How was the result received?
We are relieved to have a diagnosis, as borrelia is treatable. The co-infections Bartonella, Babesia, Yersinia were also found.
How reliable do you find the DualDur test?
I have seen the reality of this diagnostic method in the articles presenting DualDur, having studied microbiology myself. DualDur is also very good because it can photograph bacteria and even visualise the so-called immune complexes. They can follow the progress of the disease, how much the pathogen has multiplied or how the body reacts to treatment. It is a much more sensitive test than what is available in public care.

Why did you think it was important to have a Lyme borreliosis test?
Early last summer, after a trip, I developed a cocoon-shaped redness, but I didn't take it too seriously. Soon I developed summer flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, a high fever, a persistent headache and I became so weak that I was confined to a wheelchair in early August. My lab results were good, I went from doctor to doctor until one day my gynaecologist suggested a bacterial test. I couldn't go to the endocrinologist because I was so weak, he recommended a Lyme test. Until then, it never occurred to me that I might be infected with ticks...
How did you find out about the DualDur test?
I started to search the net, there I came across news about the DualDur test, I read a lot of good things Bózsik I have searched for information about the doctor, among other things, in the patients' Fb groups and here Esztó doctor, who recommended the test. I wanted to get better, I wanted to be able to pick up my youngest daughter from nursery school again, because I didn't always manage to do that, and sometimes my leg gave out on me on the way.
How was the sampling done? Did you get help?
I was sampled in a laboratory in Budapest in November and had to follow a fat-free diet for 24 hours before the blood test. The contact person was very patient, kind and answered all my questions, but I also have nothing but good things to say about the staff at the lab.
What did the results show?
I was confirmed to have Lyme disease, and Bartonella was detected as a co-infection. A parallel Western blot also confirmed the presence of antibodies, which I got first, after a few days, and the others after two weeks. All results were sent by email and photos were attached. The results were interpreted by my doctor. Bartonella infection seems to have been with me for some time, and it is possible that I have been bitten by infected ticks before.
How did you receive the fact that you were infected?
I was surprised, I couldn't believe that I had Lyme, that I had Bartonella. I was almost in shock. Then I managed to calm down a bit, because I finally found out what was wrong. You think of everything until you have a diagnosis. The rapid deterioration of my physical condition made me terribly frustrated that I, a bouncy, fit, mother of three, was forced into a wheelchair, collapsed at my child's school opening... The result was that everything had a name, a face.
How reliable do you find the DualDur test?
I consider the test to be highly reliable. Dr Bózsik's name gives me a feeling of security and confidence, as does Dr Esztó's, they are the trademarks of DualDur for me, which finally gave me a diagnosis.
What kind of therapy will you receive based on the results?
As soon as I got my results, I started my therapy in November and soon after I started I felt noticeably better. I am much better now, but I still have difficult days. My foggy brain symptoms have improved to the point where I am able to study, take my daughter to nursery and even start doing Pilates again.

Why did you think it was important to have a Lyme borreliosis test?
I wanted to do the test because it directly detects the pathogen, so I think it's accurate, and it's no coincidence that it won an innovation award. I had already had the Elispot test done a year earlier, which showed cellular immunity to borellia, but it was still important to me because I suspected that most of my symptoms were not caused by borellia but by Bartonella, which only this test can detect in its chronic state in this country.
How did you find out about the DualDur test?
When it occurred to me that I might have a tick-borne infection, I started researching on the internet, looking at a number of English-language sites, and then I joined a Facebook group of Lyme sufferers and read about DualDur. Patients, including myself, were eagerly waiting for the test to be available.
How long did it take to get results after sampling?
The sampling was quick, essentially a painless blood draw, and the results came quickly.
How did you receive the confirmation of your suspicions?
Many of my fellow patients suffer from a lack of understanding, because those around them don't believe they are really ill. Fortunately, I have not had this problem, and my family and friends have been understanding. The finding is a tangible proof, backed up by a photograph. It confirmed for me that I was finally sure I had Bartonella, as Lyme had been indirectly confirmed earlier.
How reliable do you find the DualDur test?
I think it's very reliable, I couldn't wait to get it done. I am extremely satisfied as it maps my disease and the results confirm my symptoms: it shows how I feel. The scans show the Bartonella in the red blood cells. I think it's revolutionary because they are working with a special fluid and using artificial intelligence.
Has the therapy changed after the diagnosis?
Since Bartonella has been confirmed, the length of treatment may have increased, so I can continue to take my medication and rely on my GP for everything. Thanks to the therapy, I have been able to return to work and have regained seventy percent of my previous life.

Why did you think it was important to have a Lyme borreliosis test?
To finally get confirmation, confirmation that my daughter and I do have Lyme disease, and co-infections. In fact, our ordeal started because of my daughter's health problems, and in the meantime I found out that I almost certainly have Lyme. It was probably a fetal infection in my daughter. I went everywhere with my child, she started having symptoms at the age of three and a half, she is now ten. I found out she might have Lyme when she was nine. We waited a long time for confirmation, even having blood tests done abroad. Although I'd heard about the darkvision test before. As you mentioned, you had information about the DualDur test. When did you manage to get it done?
Having been in constant contact with patients and watching the fate of DualDur as the testing opportunity launched in the summer of 2021, we immediately signed up in August. The sampling is nothing more than a venous blood draw.
How long did it take to get a result?
We received the first results very quickly: the sampling was on 16 August, and the email arrived on 25 August [editor's note: due to increased demand, the waiting time has increased since then]
How did it affect you to know the result?
In a way I was relieved, because finally, after almost seven years, it was confirmed that my daughter had Lyme disease, and I had no illusions about the child's health problems, and the background of the problems at school was also revealed with this result. That was the first result, and then came the additional analysis, which looked at co-infections. In this case too, the problems I had suspected were confirmed, including Bartonella in my case and babesia in my daughter's case. I also had confirmation of what could be causing my child's occasional malaria-like fever. This made me suspect babesia. My results described that I had developed immune complexes in my womb, while my daughter was not diagnosed with this. We went even further and I also asked for the subspecies of borrelia to be determined for my little girl. It turned out that she had been attacked by a subspecies that causes neurological symptoms, and little is known about the other subspecies that has been detected.
How reliable do you find the DualDur test?
I trust him absolutely. I've been to a lot of places before, tried a lot of things, but I've never really gotten such well-documented, reliable results. You can't say it's humbug. I can heartily recommend it to anyone who wants certainty.
How much did your therapy change after the exact diagnosis?
Only the dosage for my child has changed. As he had other health problems, the dosage was increased mainly because of his weight. But there is no medicine for Bartonella in children, unfortunately. So far I have only been able to get an appointment for my little girl, I have not yet been scheduled.
